We travel a lot as a family, and generally outside of Europe. I would never travel without family travel insurance, which is why we always rely on Boots travel insurance. It just takes the worry out of our trip.

Do I need family travel insurance?

Absolutely, if you are travelling outside of the United Kingdom, you need to arrange holiday insurance. We need insurance for our car, our homes, our life, why wouldn’t we arrange travel insurance?

Why do I need family travel insurance in the European Union?

All EU citizens are entitled to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in another European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland. You need to apply for a European Health Insurance Card and for emergency medical treatment you are covered.

This European Health Insurance Card, however, does NOT cover for:

  • Repatriation
  • It is not always free healthcare. For example, in some countries, patients are expected to directly contribute a percentage towards the cost of their state-provided treatment. This is known as a patient co-payment. If you receive treatment under this type of healthcare system, you are expected to pay the same co-payment charge as a patient from that country.
  • It’s not valid on cruises
  • It is not valid for private medical bills
  • It’s not valid for rescue (say you are skiing and you need a helicopter to a hospital)
  • If something is lost or stolen

Is it cheaper buying an annual trip policy or single trip?

I always thought that if I was having two trips it would be cheaper to opt for an annual policy. But this is not always the case. So make sure you check before you go. I have given some examples below. If you are using Boots Travel Insurance it is much cheaper if you are travelling more than once in a year to opt for Multi Trip Insurance.

What do I get from family travel insurance?

Now, this all depends on the cover you opt for. As I personally think Boots travel insurance is the best on the market I have focused on these.

Key Benefits

  • No upper age limit on single trip policies.
  • Extensive cover for pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Add to your Advantage Card points balance with a policy purchase.
  • Kids travel for free.
  • Discounts on couple, family or single parent family policies.
  • Specialist gadget cover.
  • Specialist trip disruption cover.
  • Exclusive 15% online discount.

  • Should you be called for jury service, are made redundant or a relative suddenly falls ill or passes away (T&Cs apply – always read your policy wording), cancellation cover insures you against the pre-paid cost of your holiday including accommodation, flights and other travel expenses that are non-refundable.
  • The cancellation clause of your policy covers you from the moment you purchase holiday insurance from Boots on Single Trip policies, and from the start date you choose on Multi Trip policies, and lasts until you return from your holiday.

Medical expenses

  • Hospitals and clinics in other countries are often privately owned businesses, and as such can charge you hundreds or thousands of pounds for treatment.
  • With travel insurance, you are covered for emergency medical expenses in the event of your illness, injury or even death during your holiday.
  • With a Boots travel insurance policy. You are also covered for pre-existing medical conditions providing they have been declared to Boots travel insurance and accepted in writing.
  • Boots aim to offer as many customers as possible affordable holiday insurance for their medical conditions.

Personal possessions

  • Should something happen to your luggage, clothes or electrical items whilst you were away. Having travel insurance which covers you for personal possessions can be a lifesaver.
  • Boots Travel Insurance policies also cover you for your gadgets, they are covered as standard under the Gold and Platinum policies and can be covered for an additional premium under the Bronze and Silver policies, so you can go away with peace of mind that everything is covered.

Personal Accident

  • Accidents are just as likely to happen abroad as they are at home.
  • Boots travel insurance policies cover you for any accident including accidental death, permanent loss of sight or limb or permanent disablement whilst on holiday.
If you are taken ill on holiday you need to have travel insurance arranged

Force Majeure

  • When it comes to going on holiday, we are often so focused on reaching our destination that we forget about the possibilities of disruption. Especially with long-haul or connecting journeys.
  • With trip disruption cover, you can have peace of mind knowing you won’t have to spend anything extra should a natural catastrophe occur. Or your tour operator goes into financial insolvency.
  • This cover comes as standard on all Boots Silver, Gold and Platinum levels of cover on our single trip and multi trip policies, and as an optional extension on our Boots Bronze cover level.

How much does family travel insurance cost?

This varies massively. Especially if you have a pre-existing condition, and if you are travelling outside of the European Union. There are a number of unheard travel insurers, but I always stick to a company I have heard of that gets great reviews. Be careful when choosing. There are so many different excesses, and there are a number of cheaper policies that wouldn’t even cover the full amount of your holiday.

I have found that Boots Travel Insurance is the BEST. It is not necessarily the cheapest. But you can use your Boots advantage card to get points, plus also it is a trusted brand. Now we are not a single parent family, however, I absolutely love the fact they take this into account. As can be seen below it is more than half the price of a 2 parent family with one child.

You so DO need travel insurance. Here’s why – I went to Australia for a year, and actually saw another traveller get hit by a car. She needed medical care, repatriation – you name it. I told the story to my customers when I was a travel agent. It’s an absolute necessity!
